PSP Skype is here: firmware update ver3.90 released
It's good to talk
Update: Read our hands-on experience of PSP Skype here.
It's time to get stuck into some update downloading because Sony has just released PSP firmware 3.90.
Sadly the latest update is going to divide us PSP owners into the 'haves' and 'have nots' because only new slim PSPs are really getting anything good with this update – that's the newly released Skype service.
The online phone and instant messaging service was announced at the start of the year but only for the PSP-2000 (aka Slim & Lite) due to it requiring the new console's extra RAM. The update installs the feature to your PSP (you need 1MB free on the Memory Stick Duo) however Sony's recent headset slip-up means you'll need a SOCOM headset to use it straight away.
For everyone who has the old lardy PSP, you get a few more added network titles. Don't all clog those Sony servers at once. A Go!Messenger icon is added, too, although won't be usable until the service's launch, expected at the end of February. Go!Messenger, Sony's own communications package, will enable both the new and old PSP consoles to use video and voice chat.
You can get the 3.90 update by selecting 'Network Update' from your PSP menu. Find out more at Sony's official site.
