Sony to unveil Skype for PSP at CES?

PSP could soon be used for free phone calls and instant messaging

Product: PSP Slim & Lite | Manufacturer: Sony
PSP could be about to take one of its biggest steps yet into the world of portable connectivity if information spotted on Sony's official CES site is correct.

The site, which has been launched prior to the January 7th start of the Consumer Electronic Show in Las Vegas, mentions Skype for PSP within a list of the console's top features. To be exact, it says: 'Call friends, talk trash to fellow gamers or catch up with acquaintances via Skype for PSP system'.

A PSP-compatible Skype client could potentially make all sorts of internet communication possible via the console. On computer, Skype-to-Skype calls using a headset are free, or users can pay a subscription to call landline or mobile numbers using it. It also provides instant messaging similar to MSN.

The news follows an announcement from Sony last year that it would be partnering with BT to offer the PSP Go!Messenger service in January 2008. Seeing as both would offer similar features, it's possible the two could be connected.

Potentially, Sony's official PSP headset could also be used for Skype chat. Equally, the Go!Cam has a built-in mic which could be made compatible with the service while the camera itself could be used like a web cam.

However, Sony has yet to make an official announcement or to say anything other than the above tantalising statement with regards to the new Skype client. If an announcement is imminent though, it's very likely it'll be made at the show between the 7th and 10th of January. We'll keep you posted on this and any other CES PSP news.
