GameStop cuts PSP hardware and software from 25% of its stores
With the PS Vita in play, the PSP's death is hastened
When the PlayStation 3 was released, sales for its predecessor obviously slowed down considerably. However, the PS2 refused to die out right away, thanks to a healthy library of games.
When it comes to Sony's handhelds, mind, the PSP doesn't appear to be following the same curve in the US market. With the PS Vita now on the market, US retailer GameStop has announced that it will be removing both PSP hardware and software from 25 per cent of its stores.
A spokesperson for the company told Kotaku: "The consolidation is occurring to maximize the merchandising space in the smallest 25% of stores."
"It will also provide a greater assortment in those stores that will continue to carry the category."
In other words, the PSP is taking up valuable shelf space - shelf space for games and consoles that are actually selling. Don't worry, though: if you're still a PSP fanatic, you can pick up games for the system from the other 75 per cent of stores, plus from the GameStop website. You can't get rid of it that easily!
