Magical overload in the first video footage of PSP's Jeanne d'Arc

Has cel-shaded anime looked better?

Product: Jeanne d'Arc | Developer: Level-5 | Publisher: Sony | Genre: Action, RPG, Strategy
As hair fashions go, boyish blonde bobcuts are a bit plain, even for the most voguish Vidal Sassoonista, but back in 15th century France, apparently it was just the thing for aspiring teenaged revolutionaries who were out to overthrow the invading English.

Add some beautiful cel-shading graphics, a plot based around escaped demons, and a complex turn-based tactical battle system and potentially you've got yourself one of the most intriguing PSP games of the year. At least, that's the story behind Jeanne d'Arc, the latest action role-player from well regarded Japanese studio Level 5, which is loosely based around Joan of Arc's military exploits (minus the stuff about demons, of course).

But don't take our word for it. Check out the neat screenshots and the first in-game footage. We think you'll agree it's one to keep your eye on.

It would be good to get some more information about that battle system though. Sure, the special effects look spectacular, but what's intriguing us are the limited amount of turns you get to complete each battle in. Another area not much in evidence in the video is the way you can combine your characters together to initiate special moves and attacks – up to seven characters can be commanded at any one time.

So we'll be keeping our scouts occupied with more news of Joan and her magical army before Jeanne d'Arc's released, something we expect to happen during the autumn.
