It was a brave experiment but, as with so much surrounding Sony's portable console, its GO!View video and film on demand service is being shuttered.

"From 25th March 2010, the GO!View service will no longer be available," says an email that's been sent out to customers.

All outstanding pre-paid credit on accounts will be repaid to registered debit and credit cards.

Launched in July 2008 in the UK and Ireland in conjunction with Sky digital TV service, it mixed free content with paid for subscription channels such as Entertainment, Drama, and Sports, including Barclays Premier League football. These were priced at £5 a month for one, £8 for two, or £10 for three.

Movies were available at between £2.50 and £3.50, TV content such as Lost and Doctor Who priced at £1.50 per episode.

Still, the service was never truly convincing in terms of its price to content ratio: something that has since been further eroded by the rise of free video services such as the BBC's iPlayer.
