It's no regular monkey business

While the console Ape Escape games have enjoyed much adulation, the popular series' attempts at making the handheld transition haven't quite been as successful, with Ape Escape P and the subsequent two Academy titles failing to truly capture the essence that made the home console versions rather special.

But Sony is nothing if not determined, hence another addition to the franchise. Currently only announced for Japan (where it's charmingly known as Sarugetchu: SaruSaru Daisakusen), this latest iteration differs significantly from its predecessors in that it places you in control of the monkeys rather than getting you to try and catch them.

Each of the loveable critters possesses a unique set of abilities, which must be exploited in order to solve the many puzzles blocking your progress (you can get a taste of the simians' varying abilities from some of the screenshots above).

Granted, it's a bit of a departure from the typical Ape Escape dynamic (in that it potentially makes the experience more generic) so we're curious to see how well it works. The finished game is set to hit Japanese stores on July 26th and we'll let you know when details of a western release become available.
