Atari leaves DS, and possibly PSP, all alone

Alone in the Dark goes missing on handheld

Following yesterday's DS 2008 release schedule extravaganza in which Atari's Alone in the Dark game was listed as coming out in March, the company has come forward to say the information is incorrect.

Some websites are now reporting the game has been scrapped altogether, although Atari didn't go quite that far when we asked them. Instead a spokesperson told us:

"The information from Nintendo is incorrect and we are unable to confirm anything at this time. Alone in the Dark for Xbox 360, PC, PlayStation 2 and Wii has today been confirmed for May 2008".

News of the rumoured PSP version of the game doesn't sound too promising either. Atari says it's yet to be officially announced and it's unable to confirm anything more.

It's possible that due to Atari's recent financial strive - it posted huge losses for the fiscal year ending March 2007 - the company doesn't want to risk a potentially unsuccessful release across every format. If the game does well on the home consoles, perhaps we could see a handheld release follow it.

Or it could be that the Central Park-set survival horror epic is simply too ambitious a game to be done justice on handheld. Either way, we'll let you know as soon as more light is shed on Alone in the Dark's disappearance.
