One of the surprising successes of PSP has been the UMD movie format. Sony reckons $250 million of UMD movies will have been sold by the end of 2005 which, combined with an expected global install base of 12 million, will make PSP the fastest growing multi-media platform ever, beating the first year numbers of both iPod and DVD players combined.

One service picking up the demand for free video footage is US video/TV/music download site 29HD. As well as a range of standard PC content, it’s also providing PSP-specific downloads direct to your PSP, formated for the PSP screen, or transferred from zip files from your PC, or as a direct video feed via Sony's official PSP Media Manager.

Currently trailers and additional behind-the-scenes footage from forthcoming films such as V for Vendetta, Jarhead, Munich and Aeon Flux plus many more are available from www.29hdnetwork.com/psp_guide.html or www.29hdnetwork.com/pspdirect.

And there’s more on the way, too, with plans to allow you to download complete films to your PSP. Formated as MP4 files, the planned service, which is currently in a beta test phase and restricted to US residents, will cost $2.99 per film. In order to access the service you’ll have to download a 40 MB client (either Mac or PC) as well as create an account, which presumably will include creditcard details.
