Sony confirms its slim Vita will go on sale in Europe next week

Good news for Vita fans with the upper-body strength of a cricket: Sony says it will launch a slimmer, lighter version of its newest handheld in Europe on February 7th.

It's pretty much identical to the re-designed PCH-2000 Vita, which Sony released in Japan last October.

That means the new system is 20 percent thinner than the original Vita, 15 percent lighter, and has an additional hour of battery life.

It also features 1GB of internal storage memory. Sony has replaced the proprietary Sony cable with a standard micro-USB port on the Vita Slim, too. Controversially, Sony has also ditched the majestic OLED screen of the original in favour of a less powerful and less vivid LCD display.

The Vita Slim will cost about £180. Pre-orders start today. It will only be available in black at launch, but a Sony representative told me that more colours may be available later in the year (the Japanese edition is also available in white, grey, yellow, pink, and brown).

Sony will also launch an indie games mega-pack, which will boast ten games, including Thomas Was Alone, Hotline Miami, Limbo, and Velocity Ultra, on one 4GB memory card. This mega-pack will cost about £20.

And for a younger audience, Sony will launch a new Invizimals game for Vita and a Nintendogs-style pet simulator called PlayStation Vita Pets.
