Good news, Vita gamers: Sony has updated its portable powerhouse's firmware to version 2.0 and introduced several interesting new features in the process.

For starters, the PS Vita now supports Sony's PlayStation Plus service, which offers exclusive discounts, 2GB of online storage for save games, early access to betas, and free games to paying members on a monthly basis.

This month, North American Vita owners can download for 'nothing' Uncharted: Golden Abyss, Jet Set Radio, WipEout 2048, Gravity Rush, and Tales From Space: Mutant Blobs Attack!

PSP hit Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions is also available as a freebie.

Before, during, and after

The PS Vita's browser, which has been "significantly" improved with this update, can now be accessed mid-game.

So, you can now search for the locations of hidden treasure items in Drake's first mobile adventure and look up tips for beating various monsters in Final Fantasy Tactics without having to close your game first.

Other additions in firmware version 2.0 include the ability to transfer content between your Vita and your PC over wi-fi, and the ability to transfer folders from your PS3 to your handheld.

Last but not least, the Vita's maps app can now display weather information, and the handheld's physical buttons can now be used to navigate more applications than before.

I wish they'd allowed grouping of icons in this release, the interface is a nightmare once you get enough games on it.

I hope Jet Set Radio will be available separately. As happy as I am to see Vita get Plus, I have most of the games on offer already.
