Video calls are in, chat is out (for now)

Skype rolls out for PS Vita allowing you to make video and audio calls
|

Internet telephony giant Skype announced that its free app for the PS Vita is now available via PSN.

The Skype app will allow PS Vita owners to make and receive video calls directly from their Vitas over 3G or wi-fi connections.

The app will utilise the system’s on-board microphone and both of the Vita's cameras, granting users the ability toggle between the front and rear camera while on a call.

A pause for thought

One feature of particular interest to gamers is the Skype app's ability to run 'background mode' during gameplay.

When a game or other application is in use, the Skype app will offer players the chance to pause the current game and take a Skype call by pressing the PS button on their Vita. This handy feature will eliminate missed calls and allow Skype users to stay connected to their contacts at all times.

It is worth noting that Skype plans to continue to update the app after the launch to introduce support for new features not presently included in the roll out package, such as chat/SMS communication.

Who needs a cell phone?

For those who prefer Skype to cellular phones, the Vita’s Skype app will also allow users to place audio-only calls to landlines with the expenditure of Skype Credit.

Further, if the Vita’s on-board speakers and headset aren’t to your liking, you can plug in a Skype certified headset into the Vita for better audio quality.

The Skype app is free, and will take up 60MB on your storage card.
