Every time you fire up your PS Vita, or awaken it from standby, you'll see the start screen.

Since it's such a constant presence, you'll want to personalise it. So, here's our super-simple guide on how to do exactly that.

A quick note before we continue: you'll need a decent-sized image on your memory card for the start screen to look sharp - an image with a resolution of 960x544 works well.

First up, select the 'Photos' application and tap the album icon to launch the program.
Now that you're in the 'Photos' menu, select 'All' to see absolutely every image in your library. Scroll through your images until you find the picture you'd like to use for your start screen. Tap it to view the picture.

In the bottom right of the screen, you'll see a quarter circle with three dots in the centre, which opens a menu.

Tap 'Use as Start Screen', then the 'OK' button. The system will automatically crop your image to fit the Vita's screen.

Tap the physical 'Home' button and then tear down the Photos LiveArea to return to the home screen.

Then, press the 'Standby' button on the top of your system to lock the screen. Press it again and you'll see your smashing new start screen.

As a footnote: should you wish to return to the default start screen, just go to 'Settings', then press 'Start' to launch the application.

Scroll to 'Format' and tap it, then select 'Restore Start Screen Image', choosing the 'Restore' button once more to complete the removal process.
