Sony has revealed during its annual earnings call that it has shifted 1.8 million PlayStation Vitas since the device hit store shelves. Sony launched its portable powerhouse in Japan in December 2011 and in the US and UK in February 2012.

"About Vita. The last year, [we sold] 1.8 million units for US, Japan, Asia and Europe. And as a starting phase, I think it was a good start," Kaz Hirai, Sony's CEO, said.

The Japanese manufacturer revealed PS Vita sales of 1.2 million at the end of February, meaning Sony sold around 600,000 Vitas worldwide in March. To give those numbers some perspective, Nintendo shifted around 2 million 3DS units between January and March.

Going forward, Sony expects combined PSP and Vita sales to total approximately 16 million during this financial year, which runs from April 2012 through to March 2013. With declining PS Vita sales, however, the company will need to weave some magic to reach that target.

"A game platform, like Vita - the software is the key to success, how good the software is. We have to reinforce the software area in order to improve the business, that is the basic line," Hirai stated.
