Incoming! The most exciting 3DS and PS Vita games for September 2014
|

Well, we made it. We're two thirds of our way through the year and many of the best games are still yet to come. Which are you looking forward to most?

After an uneventful August for 3DS, this month sees the portable favourite grab a few decent titles before the big hitter, Super Smash Bros., lands next month.

Meanwhile, PS Vita is getting a whole host of Japanese titles and the odd indie game to keep the naysayers at bay.

For better or worse, almost all the titles coming to 3DS and PS Vita this month are Japanese. Then there's FIFA 15: Legacy Edition*, with its rather worrying asterisk, especially considering no screenshots have been made public.

Stay tuned for our reviews!

PlayStation Vita

Velocity 2X
By FuturLab - out 2nd in US, 3rd in Europe

The sequel to the Gold Award-winning Velocity Ultra has you popping out of your ship for puzzle platforming segments to mix things up. Cross-buy and cross-saving to boot.

Joe Danger
By Hello Games - out 2nd in US, 3rd in Europe

A 60FPS upgraded port of the daredevil racer with a revamped control scheme and touch-controlled editor mode. Expect all the content of the original alongside new levels and new characters Sackboy (LittleBigPlanet), Atoi, and Iota (Tearaway).

Muramasa Rebirth: Hell's Where the Heart Is (DLC)
By Vanillaware - out 2nd in US, 3rd in Europe

The final piece of DLC for the stunningly gorgeous action RPG Muramasa Rebirth has Rajyaki, the Lord of Hell's daughter, shifting between her three forms to defeat bosses from the main campaign.

Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair
By Spike Chunsoft - out 2nd in US, 5th in Europe

Silver Award-winning Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc proved that visual novels were indeed a genre that western players were interested in, so the murder mystery series is back for round two.

This entry is set on on a totally tropical island, so be sure to pack your sunglasses (and make sure your will's up to date).

Warriors Orochi 3 Ultimate
By Omega Force - out 2nd in US, 5th in Europe

The third version of the third Warriors Orochi game. It's essentially Koei-Tecmo's all-stars hack and slash 'em up title. Aside from the usual Dynasty Warriors and Samurai Warriors, there will be some nifty new characters in the shape of Kasumi (Dead or Alive), Momiji, Rachel (Ninja Gaiden), Sophitia (Soul Calibur), Sterkenburg (Atelier), and more.

Natural Doctrine
By Kadokawa Corporation - out 16th in US, 19th in Europe

Teased as "XCOM meets Dark Souls", this SRPG from the director of Patapon is so hard that the Japanese release had to have an easy mode patched in. If you're a glutton for punishment, look no further this month.

Arcana Heart 3: LOVEMAX!!!!!
By Examu / Arc System Works - out 23rd in US

A highly customisable fighting game where you can tailor all 23 characters' playstyles with Arcana, which are celestial beings based on the Tarot.

The Japanese version reportedly had long load times, so we can only hope that's been fixed. There's no European release yet, beyond a vague "2014", so this might be one to import.

FIFA 15: Legacy Edition*
By EA Canada - out 23rd in US, 25th in Europe

The yearly upgrade to the football game. No, not handegg, but "soccer". You don't need us to sell you on this one, you should already know whether you're picking this up or not.

Senran Kagura Shinovi Versus
By Marvelous AQL - out 30th in US

An action brawler like Dynasty Warriors, only obscenely breast and bum-obsessed.

Nintendo 3DS

Tappingo 2
By Goodbye Galaxy Games - out 4th in US

Just missing its planned release date last month, the sequel to Bronze Award-winning grid-based puzzler Tappingo. The first was enjoyable but also a tad too easy to blitz through, so here's hoping this is a little tougher.

Cooking Mama 5: Bon Appétit!
By Cooking Mama Limited - out 16th in US

Mama's given up on her minigame madness in Europe, but she's still cooking up a feast for our pals across the pond. Pretend to cook food that looks so sumptuous that you'll end up ordering in for the evening. Damn you Mama!

Theatrhythm Final Fantasy: Curtain Call
By Square-Enix - out 16th in US, 19th in Europe

Featuring a staggering 221 songs before DLC (around three times more than the original), this is a must-buy for Final Fantasy music and rhythm game fans alike.

Fantasy Life
By Level-5 - out 26th in Europe

This is the one to watch. Arriving in Europe a month before its US release, this action RPG has you switch between 12 different jobs (from angler to woodcutter) to take on quests in a rich world. You can go solo or play with friends, so consider saving any top quality armour you forge for your pals.

FIFA 15: Legacy Edition*
By EA Canada - out 23rd in US, 26th in Europe

Not going to lie, this is going to be pretty much the same as the above Vita version, only not looking quite as pretty. Hooray.
