Christmas came early

Unboxing Muramasa Rebirth's Blessing of Amitabha limited edition

Sometimes, limited editions are just as hard for us games journalists to track down as they are for regular consumers.

It's an odd thought, surely, as you must imagine our gold-plated hovercrafts can whisk us to whatever store might be selling them, but there are times when we just wind up missing out.

The 'Blessing of Amitabha Edition' of the Bronze Award-winning Muramasa Rebirth was one such missed edition, but the good folk over at Aksys sent us over a copy to unbox so we could peer inside at its limited edition wonders.

We already knew what to expect from the limited edition - a custom-designed PS Vita face cover, a skin featuring art from the game, a drawstring pouch for your Vita, and a Muramasa lithograph drawn by Vanillaware's George Kamitani.

Still, it's amazing that Aksys was able to fit all that in this box.

Popping it open, everything's neat and tidy in there. Also, there's a copy of the game as well - I probably should have mentioned that above.

Now with everything pulled out you can see the goodies (starting counter clockwise at the lower left to center): adhesive PS Vita skin, physical copy of the game, drawstring pouch, Kamitani Lithograph in a classy black envelope, sample disc of Muramasa Rebirth's OST, and face cover.

Here's my Vita (which already has a custom Gelaskin on it) being loaded into the face cover...

... and here's the face cover closed.

It's designed for protecting your Vita during travel and, as the name implies, it covers the main screen and controls. It's a good firm plastic with a snap closure, and might replace your standard Vita case for day-to-day errands.

Now, here's the lithograph with the classy envelope behind.

No idea what we'll do with the envelope here at Pocket Gamer's snow-covered US location, but the lithograph - which measures about 7" by 4 & ¾" - is begging to be framed and displayed somewhere prominent.

The 'abridged soundtrack' disc sure is pretty. This was a bit of a surprise in the set, and while the overall short length (5 tracks, ~17 minute run time) is a bit disappointing, the exciting tracks will make a great addition to any up-tempo video game music playlist.

And here's the pouch. It's black, velvety, and has drawstrings. What more do you want from it? Cool, embossed silver lettering?

Well, guess what, Mr.-or-Ms. Choosy Gamer? It's got embossed silver lettering and an embossed silver logo.

Finally, here's the full 'Blessing of Amitabha' limited edition in all of its glory.

I was sad to take my Vita out of the snap-closed face cover as it really grew on me during the unboxing. Sure, it leaves the shoulder buttons exposed, but it's an otherwise secure plastic shell to keep your Vita safe and scratch-free.

If you're looking to pick up the Muramasa Rebirth limited edition for yourself or a Vita-owning friend this holiday season, you can try tracking one down at your local game store or hit up Amazon to grab one of its dwindling supply for about $60.
