Final Fantasy producer would 'love' to do a Vita version of FFXII

Now that the HD remakes of Final Fantasy X and X-2 received a firm release date in Japan (December 26), fans are already asking what's next for Final Fantasy on the Vita.

If X and X-2 producer Yoshinori Kitase has anything to say about with it, the answer is Final Fantasy XII.

In a recent interview with Nowgamer, Kitase said "We'd love a Vita version of Final Fantasy 12" but added that the fate of that project is intrinsically tied to the performance of the HD releases of X and X-2.

When asked why he'd bring games like Final Fantasy X and XII to the Vita, Kitase noted that "The gaming scene has changed quite a bit from 10 years ago and today's younger generation who grew up with smart devices now carry these devices around with them to play games whenever and wherever they want."

We've heard rumours of PS2-era Final Fantasy games making their way to the PS Vita before - with a port of the venerable MMORPG FFXI teased back in 2011 and earlier this year.

But bringing Final Fantasy XII to the Vita makes a large amount of sense since it's now the only Final Fantasy title that's exclusively playable on a PlayStation 2 (or early-run PS3) - thus, it's in Square Enix's interests to bring it to a more modern platform.

Released in 2006, Final Fantasy XII takes place in Ivalice - the land of Final Fantasy Tactics fame - and follows the story of a rebellious princess Ashe in her quest for revenge against the empire of Archadia.

It's also beloved by a great many Final Fantasy fans, so we'll be following any news on this one closely. If you'd like an idea of what to expect from FFXII, take a look at the PS2 trailer below.
