Combining Unity's development tools with its own server technology, GameString's Arcade Server looks set to deliver 3D capable games to web browsers over the cloud.

The collaboration by the two parties is being pitched as an attempt to provide publishers with a 'virtual interactive channel' for games at the bleeding edge.

The idea is, consumers will be able to take on Unity-based titles on any web-enabled device. The new service will take advantage of GameString's technology, which uses a dual rendering method to deliver graphically rich games in browser.

Browser blockbusters

"This new platform will allow developers to bring larger and more triple-A level games to the browser based ecosystem," said GameString CEO Chris Boothroyd.

"What we are developing is an enhanced system that delivers the Unity Web Player rendered from the cloud, supporting the highest rate of concurrent users possible.

"Our customers and their users will have access to this turbo speed streaming environment from any web-enabled device that they happen to have in their hand at that moment."

Unity is already a proven development tool, with more than 350,000 registered developers and 45 million web players installed across the globe.

On the flip side of the coin, GameString's Arcade server could expand its base further by enabling gamers on PC, mobile and tablet to take on high-powered games without the need for similarly high-powered hardware.

Next stop beta

"Unity has been hard at work democratising game development for years, and during 2011 we are taking this further than ever before with broader platform support and easier deployment to all major gaming platforms," added Unity CEO David Helgason.

"GameString is working on enhancing ease of access and to a broader audience than any on-device runtime technology can. We're excited to see where the GameString platform will take this."

GameString has confirmed that the technology behind Arcade Server will instantly launch and run games supporting both Flash and HTML5.

The next step is a planned beta for the service in summer 2011. Developers interested in taking part should email askus [at] gamestring [dot] com or check out its website.
