Apple and George RR Martin announce interactive Game of Thrones book collaboration
Could this be the start of a new age in digital publishing?
The gamebook genre is slowly becoming more and more popular as the industry flourishes, and though it's not exactly a game in the physical sense yet the recent news about George RR Martin and Apple's collaboration may spell out some exciting stuff for the future.
Yesterday the Guardian released an article announcing that Apple released Game of Thrones: Enhanced Edition on iBooks to mark the 20th anniversary of the book's publication. With this edition the interactive features include "a world of additional content" as you can access sigils, family trees, and glossaries throughout the book.
That may not sound exciting to some but with Martin's new leap into the digital age of publishing, this could potentially lead to a grey area between the publishing and digital industry that desperately needs to be explored. Could incorporating more interactive elements into a book keep a reader's attention for longer and breathe a bit of life back into reading?
A Clash of Kings, the second in the series, is scheduled for release on October 27th, whilst A Storm of Swords is due in December.
