Friday Freebie: Themes, laser beams...

With the prime ministerial debates all over the TV right now, it’s a fair bet that those consoles nestled underneath won’t get switched on for a while. But how to while away the summing up of your least favourite party?

Portable games, of course. And considering the inevitable tax increases, the more free the better.

DSiWare remains conservatively unchangeable this week, reluctant to offer up even a promotional demo or video. At least you know where you are with Nintendo - usually nowhere.

PSN isn’t quite so staunchly averse to change (of the pocket jangling kind), but its effort still feels more than a little laboured. The crafty Patchwork Heroes puts forward its case, with no less than three free themes (Bigbang, Friends and Machine) and two wallpapers.

It’s not going to give you hours of fun, admittedly, but a change is as good as a rest.

The App Store, though, is liberally peppered with gratuitous generosity. If you want to see how generous, start with The Trawler Report, which made a welcome return this week.

On top of that there's Digital Chocolate’s full, and rather handsome, RPG, Fantasy Warrior Legends. Featuring everything you’d want in a good dungeon crawler - including wide exploration, progressive stats, customisable party powers, and, err, dungeons - this is a generous offering indeed.

In-App payments allow you to expedite your progress, but thankfully the patient are rewarded with a much heavier wallet, as grinding is as rewarding in time.

Heavy Gunner 3D, the satisfying destructive shooter, is also still free following yesterday’s FreeAppADay promotion.

Of course, if all this gaming means you missed the debates entirely, you can also download the various parties' manifestos for free and read them on your iPhone later.

Our manifesto can be heard by listening to our regular podcast, the latest of which, is here.
