Lonely this Christmas

O2 mobile game download charts and new releases: December 12th

Mobile phones are tricky presents to give for Christmas. Pay as you go is an option, but that bumps the price of a decent handset well above what most of us Yorkshire folk would consider suitable for a working class Christmas.

But nor can you easily give someone a contract phone, as they tend to come free, and with a monthly bill that no one, Yorkshire or otherwise, would feel too great about maintaining for the rest of the year.

Which might explain the lack of new releases this week. December is a surprisingly quiet month for the game developers, with all the big releases primed and ready during November so they've got a month's worth of promotions to coax them off the shelves.

This presumably goes for mobile games, too, though we do still have a couple to see us through.

A new version of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? never goes amiss, and provides some level of family interaction, which bolsters the Chrimbo spirit a little. And FlatOut Racing provides a bit of high-octane escapism for those who aren't too enamoured with quiz games - a very small selection, but still sporting enough diversity.

Of course, there's a secondary market for the games industry that begins in January when people who got a new system for Christmas hit the shops looking for software. Hopefully this will also hold true for the mobile games market, and as a hardware-centric Chrimbo rolls past, the New Year will grace us with some delicious new releases. Stay tuned. Spanner Spencer
Spanner Spencer
Yes. Spanner's his real name, and he's already heard that joke you just thought of. Although Spanner's not very good, he's quite fast, and that seems to be enough to keep him in a regular supply of free games and away from the depressing world of real work.
