Eric Schmidt: Windows Phone wrong choice for Nokia

Google CEO Eric Schmidt has branded the recently announced partnership between Microsoft and Nokia the wrong choice. "We think Android was a good choice for Nokia. We are sorry they made a different choice."

When asked about the Nokia-Microsoft move by attendees at his Mobile World Congress keynote speech, Schmidt confirmed that extensive confidential negotiations had taken place between Google and Nokia. Evidently they came to nothing.

However, despite recent events the door remains open. According to Schmidt, “We would like them to adopt Android at some point in the future and that offer remains open."

Schmidt isn't alone in his disproval of Nokia's new adoption of Windows Phone 7.

A motion to remove CEO Stephen Elop and re-establish Symbian as Nokia's dominant smartphone platform was recently prompted by a number of shareholders.

This was short-lived, however, with just 36 hours elapsing before the campaign was abandoned.

"The responses that we received from institutional investors were not encouraging," the organisers stated in a blog post.
