Tanks rolling across a dusty alien landscape? Been there, done that, bought the cheap t-shirt that later shrunk in the wash. Spaceships duking it out above a planet’s atmosphere? That’s so 2001. Doing either of those on your mobile phone against up to seven other players? Now you’re talking!

No Refuge and No Refuge Universe from Mobile Interaction have been launched on 3 and take advantage of the 3G network’s high-speed data connection to enable you and seven of your buddies to fight each other via your mobile phones. The two titles span both the ground and air conflict on a war-torn alien world. No Refuge, the earlier title of the duo, puts you in control of a tank that’s yours to customise before heading out to the desert wastes where you can turn your opponents to dust. Each game has two playing modes; a single-player version gives you the opportunity to hone your skills and get your eye in while the multiplayer mode pits you against several other like-minded individuals who are as desperate for victory as you.

Winning these battles earns you much-needed cash for you to splash on upgrading your steed. Bigger guns, faster engines and cooler paint jobs are yours for the buying and every alteration you make is saved, allowing you to ride your trusty tank into battle time and time again, much like a favoured conker.

Similar opportunities await you in the sky, too, with No Refuge Universe leaving orbit to carry on the conflict in the planet’s atmosphere. With the same innovative multi-player action – these games are the first to enable you to customise your fighting craft and use them in multiplayer encounters – and intuitive controls, it looks like the dynamic duo might just usher in a new era of mobile multiplayer gaming. Currently available only on 3, you can try it out for 50p a play. Stay tuned to Pocket Gamer for a full review soon.
