Having reported on Nintendo’s ever toughening stance on DS piracy with their recent R4-busting firmware update for the DSi, here’s a further cautionary tale for any would-be digital Jack Sparrow.

A man has just been sentenced to two-and-a-half years in jail by a Kyoto court for breaking Japanese copyright law. Yoshiaki Asagiri made more than 1000 DS games available for illegal download on his website, for which he was arrested late last year.

As well as serving time behind bars, Asagiri will have to stump up £57,000 (that’s $96,000, American cousins) for his crimes. The judge said that such an act "tramples" over the efforts of those involved in the making of such games.
