If any proof was still needed that people like to play free online games, the news Nintendo's Wi-Fi Connection has logged its millionth unique player makes the case complete.

A mere three and a half months since the service went live, and supported by only three games – Mario Kart DS, Tony Hawk's American Sk8land and Animal Crossing, which together have been played online 27 million times – it's been such a success we imagine even Nintendo is surprised.

The magical millionth player was logged in Japan, and went online with Animal Crossing: Wild World – something UK DS gamers are looking forward to doing when the online community game is finally released on the 31st March.

And there's plenty more to come too, with key online titles such as Tetris DS (released on the 21st April) and Metroid Prime: Hunters (due on the 5th May) being prepared. And that's before we even start to get excited about the likes of online Pokémon and role-playing games such as Lost Magic and Contact.
