Nintendo hints at video downloads for DSi
Service to start in Japan, migrate to other territories at a later date
Nintendo has already promised applications to join downloadable games via DSiWare, but on-demand video may also be offered in the near future.
Speaking with the Wall Street Journal, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata affirmed video downloads will be available in Japan before the end of the year. "We'll start the service in Japan, and if it does well, we'd like to take it overseas."
Videos would be downloaded to your DSi via a Wii console. Direct video downloads through the handheld's DSiWare shop were not specificially mentioned, but we're hopeful that such a service would be provided, particularly for those without the console.
"There are a lot of on-demand video services, so there's no reason to do the same thing," stated Iwata. "So we're going to do something different."
Iwata wouldn't outline a hard date for the service going live in the US or UK, insisting only that it would be launched in those territories "later" and if it proved successful in Japan.
