DSi pre-orders threatening stock shortages
Don’t get those launch day blues, is the retailer’s advice
Previously it’s been stated that Nintendo isn’t planning on its usual consumer drip-feed marketing tactic when it comes the DSi, which goes on sale on Friday, though GamesIndustry.biz reports that pre-orders are likely to make the shelves run dry.
Managing director of UK retailer Chips, Don McCabe, revealed that the company is looking at a 100 per cent sell out based on pre-orders alone.
“Basically everything that we're getting in is already pre-sold before it hits the shop floor,” McCabe says.
But he does go on to point out that these pre-orders are coming from early adopters, and that Nintendo still has a lot of work to do when it comes to convincing existing DS users to upgrade.
“I get the feeling a lot of people don't really know what they're going to do with it yet.”
There's no indication when the second batch of DSis will hit the UK, but initial reactions to the launch day will undoubtedly be a deciding factor in how quickly they ship.
While other retailers took the opportunity to punt their offers and encourage people to put down deposits (despite previous reports that it probably wouldn’t be necessary), it does seem as though DSi launch day is lining up to be a sell-out success.
