It’s sold over 16 million copies in its PC version, but now Microsoft’s addictive historical strategy game Age of Empires is coming to DS. Planned for a Christmas release, one major difference with the DS version is shifting the real-time game into a more small-screen friendly turn-based system. This should give players more time to plan their moves; something that will particularly importance in the four player multiplayer mode.

Other changes include a new historical era for the game - it will be set in Middle Ages. The goal of the game - world domination - remains though. Players can choose to play as one of five civilisations; Britons, Franks, Mongols, Saracens, or Japanese. Each have their own strengths and weaknesses, and different warrior units ranging from bowmen and monks to hand cannoneers, mercenaries and samurai. There are also race-specific hero units such as Richard the Lionheart, Robin Hood, Joan of Arc and Genghis Khan.

And for those players more interested in less violence ways of winning, you can research up to 50 technologies such as chemistry, ballistics, siege craft and spying, as well as constructing impressive buildings to learn new skills and gain the resources to advance your civilisation into the next age.
