It’s a happy new year for Nintendo, which is basking in the glory of the DS having been announced as the fastest-ever selling console in Japan. Launched in December 2004, it’s taken just over a year for the DS to sell five million units - that's two months faster than the GameBoy Advance and five months quicker than Sony’s PlayStation 2, although that was more expensive.

Still, it’s an impressive figure, helped in particular by the success of casual games such as Nintendogs and the quirky Japanese brain-training games, which have yet to be released in the UK.

The biggest selling DS games in Japan during the same period were Train Your Brain (1.4 million), Animal Crossing (1.3 million), and Nintendogs and Brain Flex (both 1.1 million).
