Nintendo: 3DS video chat is possible

In an interview with Forbes, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has made a bold claim about the possible broader functionality of the 3DS.

We already know that the device will be able to snap photos, play Hollywood blockbusters and present games in eye-popping, glasses-free 3D, but that's not all the little system is capable of.

"Technologically speaking," claimed Iwata, "a variety of different things are possible with the 3DS, for example, 3D video chat."

Technically possible, sure, but practically? Seeing as the 3D picture snappers are on the outside of the device's lid, how would you broadcast your grinning mug, and see your friend's face at the same time? Still, the handheld's design isn't yet finalised.

Apple's just started wowing customers today with its FaceTime video calls on iPhone 4. Perhaps Nintendo will one-up them with 3D video, when the 3DS launches before April 2011.
