Commodore Amiga platformer Nicky Boom coming to mobile

Retro conversion ignites new developer's classic catalogue

Nicky Boom is rather an unusual choice for a retro-centric newcomer to kick off with. It's classic more in the sense of being 26 years old, rather than a forgotten favourite.

But perhaps that's no bad thing. We keep seeing adaptations of the same, well-remembered nostalgic hits to the point at which they no longer seem nostalgic, with a whole slew of mid-range 16-bit titles being wilfully overlooked.

Judging by the screenshots, Nicky Boom has retro style by the bucket full and that ought to be enough to reel in the happy retro heads. From the caricatured graphics to the modular level designs and HAM gradient backdrops, this game's painted with Amiga panache from top to toe.

You help Nicky save his grandfather from the evil witch Zoldrane by avoiding traps, finding hidden passages, defeating monsters and blowing up everything you see. The abundantly quirky platformer borrows heavily from the Super Mario Bros mould that was still in its fledgling years when Nicky was born, while adding a wry mature lilt to the game's style.

There's something more than a little disturbing about the expressionless, clown-painted face of the pot bellied arsonist, but after playing the free online version, it certainly piques our interest in not only the mobile version of Nicky Boom, but what other hidden retro delights are in waiting from developer DotEmu.

Spanner Spencer
Spanner Spencer
Yes. Spanner's his real name, and he's already heard that joke you just thought of. Although Spanner's not very good, he's quite fast, and that seems to be enough to keep him in a regular supply of free games and away from the depressing world of real work.
