Surreal juvenile pyromaniac makes his return

Classic Amiga platformer Nicky Boom now on iPhone

Perhaps it's just me, but the somewhat forgotten Amiga platformer Nicky Boom is kinda disturbing. I think it's the pot-bellied, arsonist main character, with his head tipped back and that creepy, perpetual smile underneath a thick layer of clown makeup. There's something unsettling about this guy - like you're just waiting for him to grow up and become a mute, axe wielding serial killer.

But all resurfacing childhood nightmares aside, Nicky Boom is actually the hero of DotEmu's iPhone conversion. We took a quick look at Nicky Boom on Pocket PC a while back, which has since gone on to receive critical acclaim, so this iPhone version ought to turn a few retro heads, too.

Nicky's grandfather has been kidnapped by an evil witch, who's turned the woodland creatures into monsters in an attempt to stop you, Nicky Boom, from rescuing him.

The graphics remain distinctly retro, with Amiga-esque HAM gradient backdrops and colourful level designs. These visuals have been enhanced for the iPhone, however, with a useful widescreen landscape orientation and pinch 'n' pull zoom function.

Check out the video below to see how it compares to the classic Amiga version (man, I really miss my Amiga. When will we see an Amiga emulator on the iPhone, I wonder?) then hit the 'Buy It!' button to whiz over to the Nicky Boom App Sote page for a closer look.

Yes. Spanner's his real name, and he's already heard that joke you just thought of. Although Spanner's not very good, he's quite fast, and that seems to be enough to keep him in a regular supply of free games and away from the depressing world of real work.
