Definitely a game of two halves

Every so often, you hear of a concept which, to all intents, is such a brilliant blend of bizarre and genius that it just has to work. New Star's wacky New Star Soccer is one such game.

New Star Soccer's combination of football and RPG elements has had five outings on the PC, and now a mobile version is available for the first time on iOS and Android.

Second half

A full Career mode sees you battling up from the lower leagues all the way to the top by maintaining relationships with your boss, team, fans, girlfriend (pardon?), and sponsors.

Using the odd-looking touch-based interface that eschews virtual joysticks in favour of arrows, you've got to set up opportunities and score goals, each of which helps you acquire better equipment, technique, and physical fitness.

Boot it to believe it

It all sounds much more down to earth than it really is, mind, and the game's uniqueness / wackiness lies in the balance of gameplay and RPG skill building.

There's a free browser version of the mobile game here to play right now if you want to get a sense of what we mean.

While New Star Soccer is a free-to-play experience on the App Store (and, therefore, contains IAPs) [download], the Android version is a no-nonsense one-off £1.99 purchase [buy].
