Nintendo NX could feature cartidges, a new operating system, and detachable controllers

As a number of rumours had previously assumed about the mysterious Nintendo NX 'console', sources have hesitantly revealed that the NX could be the portable console we've been waiting for.

The idea of a handheld console isn't exactly awe-inspiring with the likes of Gameboy, 2DS, and 3DS in our minds. When talk of the Nintendo NX started rolling we knew it was some sort of portable console. But what sort exactly? Here's where things get interesting.

Sources confirmed to Eurogamer earlier that the Nintendo NX will in fact be a portable, handheld console with its own display and (here's the kicker) detachable controllers on either side of the screen. Then once you're home you simply plug your NX into a docking station which then connects to your TV and continue your game on the big screen.

As if that wasn't cool enough, sources said that the NX will likely favour cartridges (Nintendo suggested about 32 GB) for games with talk of including a system for digital downloads as well. Sadly however the NX has no current plans for backwards compatibility. Given that the NX will potentially be running on a different operating system this news isn't surprising.

Still set on a September unveiling with Nintendo NX's full release due for launch in March 2017, industry insiders are assured that we could be hearing more about Nintendo's next console soon.

Days are still early but things are certainly looking up for this new breed of portable gaming.
