We imagine dolphins rue the day they ever bothered making contact with human beings. There they were doing their utmost to demonstrate their intelligence – they've learnt human sign language, joined the Navy, saved people from being eaten by sharks and taken up acting – and our response has been to stick them in tanks and get excited when they balance beach balls on their noses. Frankly, they must think we're a bit simple.

It's probably their fault though for being cute. No one who looks like they're permanently smiling and enjoys partaking in spontaneous little games has got very far throughout history. They were always destined to star in games such as My Pet Dolphin 2, announced today by publisher 505 Games.

My Pet Dolphin 2 is clearly the follow-up to last year's game, however its title is a little bit misleading in that this time around you're not actually looking after a pet dolphin, but being a baby dolphin.

The new experience lets you explore the seas around an entire island, gaining experience, unlocking new areas and meeting new sea creatures as you go.

Finding numerous undersea treasures unlocks mini-games, such as dolphin racing and deep sea diving. There's an Album mode where you can view your treasures and also – a bit more abstractly – a Flower Growing mode where you can create your own garden.

(We're not sure that bit isn't a stray sentence from 505 Games' Gardening Mama sneaking into the My Pet Dolphin 2 press release.)

My Pet Dolphin 2 will be released on DS on October 31st. That's bound to make a lot of children very happy.
