Gamevil USA has unveiled its latest mobile game, called My Monster Pet. As you might surmise from the name, it's a virtual pet game that eschews dogs and cats for monsters.

Monsters seem to need pretty much the same care as more traditonal animals, though. So you have to feed your little beastie, keep it entertained, and take it to the hospital when it falls ill.

There's also five mini-games to play, including Karaoke ("What's that coming over the hill…"), Dancing and Battle Maze. Depending on how you look after it, your monster will grow into one of 12 unique forms.

There's a couple of innovative aspects, too. The game continues even when you turn it off – the time-based element means you have to fire it up regularly to check on how your monster is doing.

Meanwhile, there's also a connected element, since you can send eggs to friends' phones so they can raise their own monster. Admittedly, this just sounds like a cuter version of the 'Tell A Friend' feature in other mobile games.

Well, not quite:

"When the giver sends a secret message with the egg, the receiver will not be able to view that message until the monster pet grows up and evolves," says Gamevil's Stephanie Huang.

No news on a European release for My Monster Pet, but we'll keep you posted.
