iPhone Game Developers World Championship 2010: The Round 1 Review
61 goals. 32 teams. 16 games. Six days.
You don’t need a degree in mathematics to realise that the Pocket Gamer iPhone Game Developers World Championship is the most spectacular, exciting, and talked-about faintly football-related tournament taking place this summer.
Here in Bath, England, we’ve been privileged to report on an opening round of group games that, largely unlike their South African equivalents, has exceeded even the loftiest of expectations.
Fans and journos alike have witnessed shocks, goalfests, netbusters, and, of course, tears, as iPhone app developers from across Planet Earth have done battle this week.
In arguably the two prime ties of the opening round, hosts England (with some notable GTA: Chinatown Wars assistance) shot four past its old comrade USA (notwithstanding recent oil spillages), whilst three-times world footballing champions Germany were driven into the ground 4-2 by Australia’s super-speedy Real Racing.
Furthermore, thanks to the incredible number of votes by the Scottish Pocket Gamer faithful, current world champs Italy were brought down a peg or five by Digital Goldfish’s Bloons TD in Monday’s incredible evening game.
Similarly stalwart backing from the vociferous app-crazy residents of Rio, Sao Paolo, and Porto Alegre swept mighty Brazil to a 5-0 tonking of Ireland’s Lights Off in a carnival atmosphere at the iconic iStadium.
The action was hot, the competition fierce and luckily for app-lovers everywhere, there’s plenty more where that came from!
Later today and over the weekend, big hitters like Street Fighter IV (Japan), X2 Football 2010 (England), Space Miner: Space Ore Bust (USA), and Alive 4-ever (Hong Kong) will join the fray.
So, make sure you pledge your allegiance, register your vote, and tune in for the latest results from this, the Greatest iPhone App Show on Earth.
