As fans of the Marvel comic book characters Professor X and Magneto collectively jiggle with anticipation over the release of the X-Men: First Class movie, out of nowhere comes the announcement of an iOS remake of the memorable 1992 arcade hit X-Men.

In X-Men for iPhone and iPad, you can blast, teleport, electrocute, and - yes, indeed - shnick your way through hundreds of Sentinels and archenemies in typical side-scrolling fashion.

Choose from a selection of six classic characters to overcome the villainous hordes, including Cyclops, Colossus, Wolverine, Storm, Nightcrawler, and (ahem) Dazzler.

Among the super villains, however, waiting for a thrashing are Pyro, The Blob, Wendigo, Nimrod, The White Queen, Juggernaut, Mystique, and the helmet-toting master of magnetism himself.

The X-Men Blackbird has landed in New Zealand, so the universal app should be touching down in the US at about 11pm EST and in the UK at midnight.

X-Men will set you back £1.79 / $2.99 / €2.39.
