Analyst Chang Chi, head of Taiwan’s Market Intelligence Center, has made his predictions on the always-moving smartphone market, and has marked Windows Phone out as the OS to watch next year.

Chi reckons that Microsoft’s mobile platform, so far struggling to get a foothold in the Android- and iOS-dominated smartphone sector, will take off once the Nokia-Microsoft handsets are released in 2012 and gain a global share of 17 per cent.

It’s just one of many positive predictions about the platform that have emerged since the Nokia deal, which sees the Finnish giants committed to producing Windows Phone handsets over Symbian- and MeeGo-powered devices.

Chi also predicted that Taiwanese manufacturer HTC would surpass the troubled Canadian handset maker RIM as the 4th biggest mobile company on the planet.

HTC has been a strong supporter of Google's mobile operating system, crafting iconic Android handsets such as the Desire and G1 / Dream, and its phones have become an increasingly common sight on the UK high streets in the past few years because of that commitment.
