Incoming! The most exciting iOS and Android games for July and beyond
|

June is almost over, which means it's time to take a look at all the exciting games that are heading to the App Store and Google Play in July and beyond.

As always, we're expecting a wide variety of titles in an even-wider variety of genres over the next few weeks.

We're not quite sure how each of the titles below will fare in the hands of our reviewers, of course, but we have high hopes for them all.

That's why they're featured in this list, after all.

Limbo
By Playdead - coming to iPhone and iPad on July 3rd

A couple of days ago, indie developer Playdead announced somewhat out of the blue that it would release its award-winning monochromatic puzzle-platformer Limbo on iPhone and iPad in July.

For those of you who are somehow unfamiliar with Limbo, you assume the role of a young nameless boy in this game. He-who-is-not-named must search for his missing sister in an eerie forest on the edge of hell.

Gentlemen!
By Lucky Frame - coming to iPad and Android sometime in July

BAFTA-winning Scottish developer Lucky Frame is the reason that Gentlemen! is on our radar.

Lucky Frame, you see, is responsible for mobile titles Bad Hotel and Wave Trip, both of which nabbed sparkling Silver accolades as they passed through our review room.

Gentlemen! is a Victorian-themed two-player brawler in which you attempt to dispatch an opponent using knives, bombs, and deadly homing pigeons.

Ring Run Circus
By Kalio - coming to iPhone and iPad sometime in July

Ring Run Circus (often referred to as the App Store's very first "ringformer") is an interesting-looking platformer with a difference.

Yup, you guessed it: every single level and stage in Ring Run Circus is made up of, well, rings.

Your aim in this title, then, is to guide one of three unique characters around said rings, ensuring that they collect flowers and pick up keys (that open exits) along the way.

Buddy & Me
By Sunbreak Games - coming to iPhone, iPad, and Android sometime in July

There are plenty of endless-running and perpetual flying titles on the App Store and Google Play, but very few of them are as colourful or as vibrant as Buddy & Me looks.

Right about now, you're probably wondering why we've got an eye on 'just another' endless-flying title.

Well, it was developed by Jason Behr. Yep, that fella who worked on the likes of Halo 4 and Metroid Prime. That's why.

The Walking Dead: 400 Days
By Telltale Games - coming to iPhone and iPad sometime in July

In this point-and-click adventure semi-sequel, you follow five different characters as they attempt to survive the first 400 days of a worldwide outbreak at an abandoned truck stop somewhere near the Georgia highway.

Unfortunately, the plot of 400 Days won't shed any light on what happened to the characters from Season 1 of The Walking Dead: The Game.

However, some of the choices you made in that first season will have an effect on this follow-up. Similarly, decisions you make in 400 Days might come back to haunt you when Season 2 is eventually released.

Shadowrun Returns
By Harebrained Schemes - coming to iPhone, iPad, and Android on July 25th

Shadowrun Returns isn't dissimilar to Fallout, Interplay Entertainment's seminal open-world RPG from 1997. So, actions are handled through a point-and-click interface.

Battles in Shadowrun Returns are turn-based affairs in which you and your team of NPCs spend AP points to carry out actions, such as moving and reloading your weapons.

Plants vs Zombies 2: It's About Time
By PopCap - coming to iPhone, iPad, and Android sometime this summer

We handed PopCap's original Plants vs Zombies a glittering Gold Award at review, so we have high hopes for this tower-defence sequel.

Yes, and we're well aware that it's free-to-play.

Gameplay in this follow-up will, obviously, closely resemble the gameplay of its predecessor, so expect to fend off attacks from waves of zombies using a wide variety of greenery.

Heroes of Loot
By OrangePixel - coming to iPhone, iPad, and Android sometime next month

Heroes of Loot is an upcoming roguelike from the independent Dutch developer responsible for rock-solid platformers Meganoid and Gunslugs.

Your mission here, then, is to explore dangerous crypts, slaying enemies, collecting treasures, and levelling-up your character along the way.

Like most roguelike titles, Heroes of Loot contains dynamically generated dungeons. So, you'll find enemies and loot in different locations every time you play.

Asphalt 8: Airborne
By Gameloft - coming to iPhone, iPad, and Android sometime in July

The eighth instalment of Gameloft's popular high-octane racing franchise will boast new cars, new tracks, a brand-new physics engine, AND some new multiplayer modes.

Said new game modes include Infected, which is basically a massive game of tag; and Gate Drift, which is pretty self-explanatory.

The new tracks are located in some of the world's most glamorous locations, including Nevada, Iceland, London, and Tokyo.

Fist of Awesome
By Nicoll Hunt - coming to iPhone, iPad, and Android sometime in July

In most side-scrolling brawlers, you are pitted against knife-wielding thugs, grudge-bearing bikers, and other unscrupulous humans.

In Fist of Awesome, on the other hand, you are thrown headlong into a tussle with peeved-off bison, waves of miffed bears, and all manner of other cuddly critters.
