Fishing isn't actually that great once you've used up your free worms - the cost of the manufacturing outstrips the benefits.
Instead, use cows and pigs for the majority of your food production. And farms, of course.
The main resource is gold, though. Try and reign back on frivolous spending at the start of the game to keep progression swift.

If I were starting over, I would spend as much on land as I could at the start and develope as I could. The cost of land sky rockets as you move higher up.

The more blue Barns that you build, the more food and lumber you can store. For example, 3 barns will hold 1800 food and 1800 lumber.

Always have something being generated by your infirmaries and workshops. It's not so handy in the beginning, but later in the game when people start getting ill or you receive certain tasks you'll already have the tools ready to take care of them.
