A humble indie developer is currently locked in a fierce battle with Rovio and OMGPOP for the #1 spot on the App Store paid-for apps charts.

Zach Gage released iPad word game SpellTower late last year, and promptly received a Gold Award from us here at Pocket Gamer. It's rather lovely, and you really should play it.

Furthermore, SpellTower was the beneficiary of a sizable update last week, which allows you to compete with an opponent to create words from lettered tiles before they fully fill your screen.

To egg you on even more, the game is currently half price for both iPhone and iPad, at just 69p / 99c. This price drop is causing quite a stir in the US iPhone and iPad paid charts on iTunes.

On your marks, get set, climb

SpellTower is currently 13th in the US App Store iPhone chart, which is impressive enough, but in the iPad chart it's managed to reach the #3 spot, giving Rovio's Angry Birds Space and OMGPOP's Draw Something a run for their money.

If you're planning to grab the game, make sure you do it quickly - the sale will only run for 24 hours.
