Despite a rocky launch and low sales for most of the year, perhaps Sony was correct in being relaxed over Vita’s prospects.

Weekly hardware sales in Japan show the number of PS Vitas sold nearly doubling, up 77 per cent from 7,551 units sold to 13,383.

The PSP fell 5 per cent during this same period, from 10,547 units sold to 10,038.

Sales of the Nintendo 3DS, on the other hand, are back to normal levels after a huge spike following the release of Dragon Quest Monsters: Terry's Wonderland 3D.

The 3DS sold 64,875 units this week, down 36 per cent from last week’s sales figures of 101,075.

Curriculum Vita

Persona 4 The Golden is due out in Japan today (14th June), and will also likely increase the number of Vitas sold. Additionally, Japan will see the release of Metal Gear Solid: HD Collection at the end of June.

These releases are good news for PS Vita fans, in light of recent game cancellations, but are bad news for those waiting on a PS Vita price cut.
