The PS Vita continues to struggle in Japan, selling only 18,361 units during the console’s fifth week on store shelves.
Despite shifting an encouraging 312,407 consoles in its first weekend, sales of Sony's latest handheld machine dropped 77 per cent to a less-than-encouraging 72,479 in week two.
Some retailers responded by lowering their prices, but even this has apparently not been enough to revive the PS Vita’s fortunes.
Today’s figures represent a painful 95 per cent drop off from week one, a number that will no doubt be the cause of a few furrowed brows over at Sony HQ.
Downward trend
While the PS Vita managed only 18,361 this week, Nintendo rubbed salt into the wound by shifting a comparatively healthy 100,668 3DS consoles.
Even the aging PSP sold 22,538 units this week, outselling its cutting-edge successor to the tune of 4,177 units.
On the bright side, Sony consoles have always fared well in the west, so the hardware giant will be hoping for a significant sales boost when the PS Vita launches in Europe and North America on February 22nd. Pocket-lint
Hey Guest, you typed that just as if you're that "Random Guy" person from the 3DS vs Vita comments section. I'm guessing you're scared the 3DS will lose the handheld war against the Vita and you're posting rude comments against the Vita hoping it'll prevent the 3DS from failing miserably.
trololol u mad?
All this shows is that Japanese gamers lack any sort of refined taste. I don't know why, but their culture seems to have degraded since around 2006/2007. I've written some lengthy articles on the matter on separate websites, I'm not gonna go on here with all that information but I will say I'm disappointed in Japanese gamers and game development studios lately.
I'm just surprised people would pay $170 for a game system that's going to look stupid compared to the inevitable revised 3DS model I expect will release by Christmas this year.

The lack of the best selling game ever made (COD) makes this awesome system dead on arrival. The vita has 2 analogue sticks specifically put there so we could have portable FPS. Call of duty is the only game needed for this system to start flying off the shelves. It should have been a launch title and now seems like its not going to happen at all. I was ready to buy on feb 22 if and only COD was available but it's not so the vita will never have my hands wrapped around it.

Ouch. I guess the Japanese are happy with the PSP for now (and there are some awesome games on it over there).
Get Project Diva, Monster Hunter and Gundam Vs on there and it'll fly off shelves.

Said it before and I'll say it again, Sony really should have left the success of the PSP in Japan to keep on running and launch the Vita in the west first... http://psp2roundup.blogspot.com/2012/01/ps-vita-sales-show-one-thing-it-should.html

i love my ps vita import, there are are a few updates that sony could improve on the vita and make it more media and social friendly, which i hope they will with updates, still a lot better than what my 3ds offers. but as a gaming device this is a beast. japan hasn't given up on the vita, just as they didn't give up on the 3ds when it was selling badly. The psp is outselling the vita in the same way the ds was outselling 3ds. they are just waiting for a price cut, as it costs them alot more than what the UK/EU and the US are getting it for, and a (japan) system selling game, as at the moment they dont really have one.

PSP was a bigger seller in Japan than North America.... mostly due to Monster Hunter..which is now on the 3DS...
