Despite a solid start that saw Sony shift over 320,000 units of its new PS Vita system in Japan in two days, sales of its powerhouse portable fell by over 77 per cent in its second week to just 72,479.

This worrying nosedive meant that Vita sales for the week actually sank below those of its predecessor, the PSP.

Vita software has also rapidly dropped out of favour among gamers in Japan, according to the Media Create charts.

Popular launch titles including Hot Shots Golf 6 and Uncharted: Golden Abyss now sit in the rather lowly 37th and 40th places, respectively. Re-Vita-lised

In contrast, the once-struggling Nintendo 3DS has enjoyed a strong holiday season, crossing the 4.1 million sales mark in Japan. Nintendo managed to move an impressive 482,200 systems in just the week commencing December 19th, 2011.

This was helped in no small part by the recent launch of million sellers Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7, which have fuelled a resurgence in the popularity of the 3DS worldwide.
