Sega has revealed that its upcoming JRPG sequel Phantasy Star Online 2 will be coming to Android, iOS, and the PS Vita.
Unlike its Dreamcast-based predecessor, Phantasy Star Online 2 will be a free-to-play title. Instead of paying upfront for the game, then, you will be required to fork out for certain in-game items, as and when they are required.
While the PC and PS Vita versions will reportedly support cross-platform multiplayer, Android and iOS users will have to make do with basic data-sharing options.
The guys at Sega don't see this limited functionality as a negative, though: they believe that the mobile version's simplified controls and character creation system lead to a more "personal experience".
Up to 100,000 players will be able to participate in Phantasy Star Online 2's 24-hour closed beta, which is scheduled to take place towards the end of April.
If you're happy to wait for the full release, however, Phantasy Star Online 2 will be launching on Android and iOS sometime this winter. The Vita version will arrive in 2013. The PC edition, meanwhile, will be available this summer.
