Popular indie title Minecraft is to get an official release on iPad and iPhone later this year.

Markus Persson, founder of the game’s developer Mojang, has revealed that the conversion will be handled in-house by its new recruit Aron Nieminen. Persson added that the title would be treated slightly differently to the browser and download versions, which have racked up more than 1.3 million sales.

The iOS title won't benefit from the same updates as the home computer version. Instead, it'll get additions that make the "most sense" for the iPhone's and iPad's touchscreen capabilities.

For those not in the know, Minecraft involves producing raw materials, building shelters, and fighting off foes while trying to construct virtual world.

Having being copied and released in several unofficial forms on the App Store in the past, an official version of the game has been a long time coming.
