Speaking during a keynote held at GDC Taipei, CEO of Epic Games Tim Sweeney revealed that the iPhone and iPad slash-'em-up Infinity Blade is his company's most profitable release, despite Epic being responsible for AAA console titles such as Gears of War.

"The most profitable game we've ever made, in terms of man years invested versus revenue, is actually Infinity Blade. It's more profitable than Gears of War," Sweeney said.

Sticking with smartphones and tablets, including Apple's range of iOS-powered devices, Sweeney stated that his company has been "very, very surprised to see how fast smartphone and tablet devices are improving."

"We expect DirectX technology to be widely available on these mobile devices in the next few years," he added while talking about the rate at which the iPad 3 is approaching the performance levels of home consoles like the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

During the talk, Sweeney also expressed his belief that future growth in the gaming industry will be fuelled by free-to-play offerings. We're sure you're all thrilled about that one.
