Battles against dragons in games usually turn out to be thrilling affairs - so, fighting as a dragon should be doubly exciting, right?

That's what developer Haypi Co. is hoping with its latest iOS release, Haypi Dragon, anyway. In this game, you compete in turn-based battles - offline and online - either in tense one-on-one scenarios or large-scale four-on-four team wars.

Thomas Ren, CEO at Haypi, spoke to us about Haypi Dragon's online options, the art design, and what inspired its development.

Pocket Gamer: What have you and your team done to make sure that the shooting back-and-forth gameplay doesn't get too repetitive?

Thomas Ren: There are several different dragons with their own skills and abilities. Players need to win new dragons in every boss stage and make good use of them according to their needs in the future battle.

How does Haypi Dragon stand out in the competitive physics / action game genre?

Through its beautifully designed characters, intriguing storyline, five different scenes with more than 100 levels, challenging PVP, alluring hidden Laputa and secret of tree.

How have you made sure that people keep coming back to play the game online?

We kept adding new features to the game, such as new levels, new dragons, new tasks, new items, and assorted activities. During multiplayer PVP, players can choose their friend as their ally or enemy, too.

Haypi Dragon's characters have a distinctive design - what was the decision process like in making them look like this?

We worked with the famous designer Michael Heald - he was our main artist. We worked closely with him to make sure he understands that we want our characters to look simple, vivid, and original.

Were you inspired by any other titles when developing Haypi Dragon?

Yes, we learnt from many different games like Angry Birds and Worms, but it is the originality of our game that we are very proud of.

What challenges did you face during the game's development, and how did you overcome them?

It is hard to keep a game like this well balanced. We learnt from many other games, tested the data repeatedly, and learnt from our own past experiences. To sum up, we did our best to make every design element in the game well balanced and logical.

Which part of the game are you and your team the most proud of, and why? The fact that there are different dragons with their own skills and abilities. Every dragon can be very powerful in the game, as long as you know how to use it wisely. What did the recent 1.3 update add to the game?

Do you have anything planned in terms of future updates for Haypi Dragon, and if so, can you give us any details of what these might include?

We will add more dragons - for example, a devil dragon. In the near future, there will be cross-server PVP, as well.

Have you any plans to bring the game to other mobile formats?

An Android version is currently under development.
