The 25th annual Golden Joystick Awards ceremony took place earlier this afternoon and the various winners are obviously now busy celebrating their victory over their rivals by consuming their body weight in champagne.
Good for them.
Of particular interest to us, however, are just two categories, namely those relating to the best mobile and best handheld game of the year.
We knew from the shortlisted nominees announced during the summer (see below) that we were left with a selection that, in our humble opinion, poorly represents the variety and quality to be found both on mobile and handhelds. But then you can't control these things when at the mercy of the general gaming public (the Golden Joystick Awards are voted for by players), and some excellent games did still manage to sneak their way in.
Nevertheless, it's somewhat depressing to learn that – fine game as it is – the entirely predictable choice of GTA: Vice City Stories topped the handheld votes, while on mobile, Final Fantasy did at least bring a little element of surprise. Though, it should be said, that hardly balances out our disappointment at some of the criminal omissions from the nominee lists.
If you're interested, we've included the finalists from both categories below.
