Managing to combine the three hottest trends in the mobile industry comes GeoSocials, an iPhone location-based social gaming app.

It's a virtual geocaching game that keeps the action local, operating within a 50 square mile area around your current location.

In this, you go on treasure hunts set up by the developers, as well as being able to drop virtual treasure for other players to find. You solve simple mini-games such as memory tests, trivia questions or gesture or voice-activated activities to claim these.

Here be monsters?

You can see other players in real-time, friend them in the game, and interact, while a points-based experience system - gained as you find and drop treasure and interact with friends etc - feeds into the friend, local and global leaderboards.

Currently only available in the US and UK for iPhone, GeoSocials is free, and will be coming to iPad, Android and BlackBerry later in 2011.

Indeed, more generally, the developer has lots of plans to extend the service, including adding branded treasures and deals from company around your current location. One thing it does promise however; no check ins.

You can see how it works in the following video or get more information from the website.
